What is The Travel Paradox?

My name is JL. I’m a traveller. And an over-thinker. I ask a lot of questions.

I believe that travel is one of the best things in the world, but it is not without consequences.

The Travel Paradox is a place to look closely at the contradictions, dilemmas, and ideological conundrums that arise from travelling with your eyes wide open.

Looking for travellers, questioners, and thinkers

I’m looking to build a community of travellers and thinkers who want to ask the tough questions about travel and its effects on the places we visit and the people we encounter as tourists, and who are willing to learn from the answers.

What will I get if I subscribe?

Subscribers will receive a weekly newsletter by email that includes links to most of my posts from the week, and a Weekly Audio Digest which includes bonus content (like recommendations about my favourite travel related things on Substack that week) and other commentary.

If you are on the Substack app, or visit Substack.com, you’ll find all my posts in your feed, and you’ll be able to comment.

You can also like and share posts, which would be very kind. Likes, shares and comments are a Substacker’s love language.

At the moment, everything I post is free. Subscribing shows your support for my writing, and ensures that you are included in all the happenings at The Travel Paradox.

I have also just launched a second publication called Jumble of Sea Glass. Here I will focus on daily musings and things I already know but which I need to be reminded. This newsletter will arrive in your inbox (and your Substack feed) most Sundays, if you subscribe.

Thank you for your interest!

I’m a 57 year old retired Canadian. I’m a questioner by nature. And now that I have time, I want to write about my experiences.

Over the last 15 years I have travelled throughout Europe, the US and Canada, and Cuba. My most recent trip was to the Antarctic Peninsula, Argentina and Perú.

For years I wrote as part of my professional work, and now I get to just write for me.

Whether it is a funny story about an adventure, a silly observance of daily life, or a serious piece about colonization or poverty, I’m honoured to have the opportunity to share what is on my heart with you.
